Chapter Seven

Topher

At least Buster and I wouldn’t be homeless.

I kept telling myself that as I clicked through job listings for remote IT work on the third site I’d uploaded my resume to in the week since Renn and I had been fired. I sat on Renn’s couch, working on my laptop, with Buster asleep beside me. It was soothing to be able to stroke his soft fur as I scrolled through the barren wasteland of online job listings.

There were tons of listings for IT professionals that I was abundantly qualified for. Some of them were for companies that I would have loved to have worked for, including the publisher who put out several of my favorite comic series. But even with the filter for remote work applied to my searches, every company wanted someone to work at the office at least one or two days a week. And that was after an orientation period that had to take place in the office.

I couldn’t do it. Not now, at least, and maybe not ever. It wasn’t just my anxiety anymore either. At the moment, because of the new bond Renn and I had, even the thought of being away from him all day, or for more than an hour or so, made my skin crawl and my lungs contract so I couldn’t breathe. Not every newly bonded couple had problems being separated from each other as the bond settled after forming, but it was just my luck that all signs indicated Renn and I were one of those couples.

I closed my laptop, moved gingerly away from Buster so that I didn’t wake him—he opened one eye and looked at me before going right back to sleep, without a care in the world—then stood. I ran through some of the breathing exercises a therapist had taught me years ago as I paced around the living room.

It would be okay. It would be alright. I rubbed my hands over my face to try to clear the bad thoughts and solidify those good ones. Renn was at a job interview not far away, I would find something that suited my skills soon, Buster was adapting well to our new home, and at least I wouldn’t be homeless.

In the end, the thing that stopped me from rushing into a full-blown anxiety attack was moving into the bedroom, opening Renn’s closet, and sticking my face into his clothes so that I could breathe in his scent. Actually, it was amazing how quickly surrounding myself with my alpha’s scent calmed budding panic attacks. If I’d known that a mate’s scent could calm me better than any medication I’d ever tried, I would have looked for one sooner.

I winced at the thought and stepped all the way into the closet, surrounding myself with Renn’s clothes and leaning against the back wall. I couldn’t even joke about finding a mate other than Renn. As for timing, whatever forces of the universe had brought us together might not have been able to do so any earlier.
